The Dragonslayers' Tavern
The Invulnerable Coat of Aranda Markelhay
the founder of Fallcrest's legendary chainmail
(Modified from “The Invulnerable Coat of Arnd” in the Dungeon Master’s Guide for Dungeons and Dragons, 4th Edition)
This gleaming chainmail belonged to Aranda Markelhay, founder of Fallcrest and Moonstone Keep. She was a devout follower of Sehanine (like most of her descendants) and a stalwart war captain. Some saw the goddess’ hand in Aranda’s clever acceptance of a colonial charter that allowed her to escape an arranged marriage. The armor which she wore throughout the wild frontier period of Fallcrest became well known to and feared by the nearby goblin and lizardfolk tribes.
Four generations later, Arnd Markelhay wore the aged but still formidable suit into battle against the marauding Bloodspear Orcs. Arnd was a Paladin of Kord, in contrast with the rest of his kin, and upon becoming the Lord Warden of Fallcrest, he had added a golden symbol of the god’s fist to the armor. Although Arnd maintained an iron vigil over the city, a betrayal on the eve of his counter-attack cost him the battle and his life.
The armor next resurfaced in the hoard of Skatharilarn, a Black Dragon who had taken up residence in Kobold Hall. It was here that Wolwsgard claimed the suit and began to unlock its hidden potential. Though it kept him safe through many adventures, the spirits of the Markelhays moved on, satisfied, once the Dragonslayers defeated the Bloodspears to win the Second Battle of Fallcrest.
Though the magic had faded, Lord Warden Faren Markelhay still treasured the armor as a symbol of his house. At Markelhay’s request, the Captain placed a disguising enchantment on the armor and changed the symbol of Kord to one of Sehanine before handing it over (at a tidy profit).
